Sale Report on our last auction.
There
was so much interest in Brightwells first Garden sale, originally intended as
an annual event, that a second was held on July 9th and a third is
planned for 1st October. With
a selection ranging from groups of stone slabs to antique statuary, garden
lovers were tempted into the saleroom and seemed undeterred by the weight of
many of the items.
A
white marble figure of a lady reclining on a lion’s back, just 2ft 2ins high,
attracted a lot of interest, despite slight damage and sold for £850. An
antique stone font with a ram’s head spout reached £520, while a large painted
cast iron cannon on spoked metal wheels achieved £600. An unusually large stone
trough with chamfered corners realised £880 while a 10ft example made £520. A
terra cotta pair of urns with a relief design of Grecian figures achieved £400.
A
heavy, but small, cast iron garden seat with pierced scrollwork to the back
would have suited any garden and made £190. A cast iron campagna vase on a
terra cotta stand reached £170 with a nineteenth century sundial on a granite
stand making the same price. Decorative chimney pots have attracted gardeners
for many years and sold between £40 and £80. For eating al fresco, there was a
reconstituted stone circular table with three matching benches at £100 or a
wrought iron gazebo complete with three chairs at £440.
The
sale included a number of architectural pieces, such as a wrought iron spiral
staircase at £520 or fourteen Cuban mahogany stair treads at £260. An antique
iron gate with a domed top sold for £380 with a small cast iron horseshoe gate
making £80. A quantity of stone flagstones, approximately 10ft square made
£220.
Old
pub tables seem to keep their appeal for garden use, an example with a wooden
top selling for £120. A garden seat with scrolled arms and legs made £60,
despite some damage, with a sundial on a baluster column base selling for £110.
A large terra cotta two handled olive jar sold for £420 with another with
incised geometric friezes reaching £340.
