Description
1976 Alfa Romeo GT Junior 1600
Well-maintained
with many new parts; current owner 11 years; driven over 100 miles to the sale;
a cracking example of this beautiful Italian sportscar
Launched in
1963, the 105 Series Giulia GT Coupe was the long-awaited replacement for the
gorgeous but dated 101 Series Giulietta Sprint.
It was styled in just two months by a virtually unknown 22-year-old
who worked on it in the evenings during his national service. That man was
Giorgetto Giugiaro, on contract to Bertone, who went on to become one of the
most famous car designers of all time. The balance of glass and metal, soft
curves and sharp edges broke new ground in car design and proved highly
influential. Rightly regarded as an all-time classic, the Giulia Coupe was to
remain in production very little altered until 1976.
The 1600 GT Junior came out in 1972 and was intended to plug the
gap between the 1300 GT and the 2000 GTV. It was powered by a quick-revving
1,570cc twin-cam four that produced 110bhp and 115lb/ft of torque and gave it a
top speed of 115mph. The underpinnings were taken straight from the new Giulia
Ti sporting saloon, sharing the same five-speed manual gearbox, independent
front suspension, coil-sprung live rear axle and all-round disc brakes. Overall,
it made for a delightful package that offered a seductive blend of performance,
handling and style.
First registered in June
1976, this lovely UK market GT Junior has been in the current ownership since
2011 with six owners before that. Although there is no history with the car
prior to 2011, it has clearly led a very sheltered life and looks wonderful. The
Le Mans Blue paintwork is in great shape, as is the cream cloth
upholstery.
Nine old MOTs show that the car has
covered 13,700 miles in the last 11 years, the odometer currently showing 75,580
miles. Lots of bills show careful upkeep over that time, the car being last
serviced in May 2020 since when it has only done about 350 miles. It was
previously serviced at 74,878 miles in May 2018 and at 74,038 miles in June 2017
when it also had a new fuel pump and new rear and centre exhaust
sections.
To summarise some of the other bills:
in 2014 it had a new rear screen rubber; in 2013 it had a new brake master
cylinder, a new front crankshaft oil seal and a new set of carpets in the boot;
in 2012 it had another service with new oil filter, points, condenser, HT leads
plus new clutch master and slave cylinders; in 2011 it had another service
including new rear brake discs/pads, propshaft bearings, door and boot
seals.
Driven over 100 miles to the sale, it
has an MOT until June 2022 with just a couple of minor advisories for a nail in
the n/s/r tyre and a slight oil leak. Starting promptly and running beautifully
as we have moved it around on site, with good 50psi oil pressure, it rides on a
matching set of Pirelli P3000 tyres and needs nothing except a proud new owner.
Every true petrolhead should own an Alfa
Bertone Coupe at least once in their lives and this little beauty looks mighty
tempting at the guide price suggested.
