1988 Toyota MR2
Cracking 1st-Gen slick-top
example with punchy 4A-GE 1.6 litre engine, manual 'box and just 77,800
miles - Investment Alert!
Dating from
November 1988 this W10, 1st-Generation MR2 is a later example (having
been introduced in 1984) and is finished in White and sits upon its original 14”
eight-hole alloy wheels and appears to be in totally stock condition which is
most pleasing to see.
Sitting amid-ships is a
naturally aspirated 1.6-litre 4A-GE four-cylinder petrol engine borrowed from
the Corolla which develops in UK market spec, 112bhp (and is equipped with Denso
electronic port fuel injection and T-VIS – variable intake geometry) driving the
rear wheels via five-speed manual transmission which gave a zero to sixty time
of a nippy 8.5 seconds.
Inside, we find dark
grey cloth interior, being very comfortable with a real ‘cockpit’ feel. The spec
includes electric windows, glass sunroof, heated rear screen, electric mirrors
and Pioneer radio/CD player.
The car comes to us from a deceased
estate and shows just 77,800 miles which is uncommonly low for an MR2 of this
era. We understand from the vendors
that the owner sought out the best he could find after selling another Mk1 a few
years before and regretting it ever since.
The
history file includes the V5C revealing eight former keepers, 18 old MOTs dating
back to 1992 and 18,736 miles along with a selection of invoices for parts and
maintenance dating back to 1989.
This attractive MR2 comes with a current MOT valid until May
2023 recording no advisories and reveals the car has covered only limited
mileage in the six years.
Evidently crying out to be enjoyed on the road,
these slick-top 1st-Gen MR2’s have really started to climb in value
and appeal as the market remembers just how good they were as lightweight,
punchy analogue sports cars with a proper manual box.
