1987 GMC Caballero
Incredible looking machine
with 5.0 V8 engine, handbuilt electrically adjustable exhaust from quiet to
monstrous (straight out the downpipe if you want!), Range Rover Sport
seats; California car in stonking order ready to be enjoyed
Dating from January 1987 this exciting, late model GMC Caballero
(3rd Generation) is virtually the same as the Chevrolet El
Camino - as this car is now badged. The body was produced for
GM by Fisher, the only difference between this and its Chevy El Camino
Cousin being trim, badges and wheels.
So
similar were they, that many didn’t know there was a GMC version and as such
they are comparatively rarer as a result.
As a late model example, we see the
final styling itineration here with the full width front grill housing four
headlamps with four-row cross hatch pattern similar to that of the final
generation of El Camino.
Finished in Range
Rover SVR Blue, this stunning example came into the UK from California via the
importer for our vendor and was first registered here in May 2019, since when he
undertook the re-paint and re-trim. The truck is incredibly sound and solid
being a Cali-car.
Inside, we find a set of manually
adjustable leather Range Rover Sport seats (rather than the standard bench),
centre binnacle between the seats and section behind the seats to mount the
speakers on. We also note fitment
of a LCD screen below the centre console.
This example looks to have the automatic gear-shifter floor mounted which
was optional, most had a column change.
The
vendor, an engineer and fabricator has custom made the exhaust system, which
features a clever electric motor controlled by a switch under the dash to change
how the exhaust works, you can adjust from ‘stock’ i.e. quiet, but still
obviously a V8 to louder…..to louder, to much louder with it basically coming
from the downpipes which sounds incredible, as in 'Thor the God of Thunder' is
there with you – absolutely awesome!!
Under
that bonnet, we find what we believe to be the 305 CUI (5.0 litre) Small block
V8 engine (V5C states 5000cc) mated to a three-speed THM (turbo-hydro-matic)
automatic transmission.
The history file
includes the V5C recording just one former keeper (the importer), current MOT
valid until September 2023 recording no advisories, a couple of photos of the
truck and a few bills for trim bits etc and other parts purchased from the
States plus an Ecklers El Camino parts store magazine for future parts purchase
reference.
Ready to be used and enjoyed, this
is sure to put a huge grin on your face – we absolutely love it.
