1972 Mercedes-Benz 350SL

Stalled restoration project in storage for
several years; very early example with much going for it
Dating from 1972 this is a particularly early R107 generation SL
coming to us in 350SL form. The car
is finished in blue and sits on period correct steel wheels with polished hub
caps and benefits from its factory removable hard top.
The car has been with our vendor for the last 12 years, and is one
of several R107’s he owns, and with it comes a tail of woe. The car was sent for some restorative
works to be carried out, years went by but little contact received. Eventually our vendor had the car back
with little to no work carried out, the car going back into storage where it
remained.
The car does turn and we are told
will start with some fresh fuel, but have not attempted to start it as
it has be standing unused for some time.
That
aside, the engine turned freely and the ignition lights show. The bodywork shows signs of age and of
being stored with marks and dinks but generally looks straight enough, as with
the chrome work. The head lights look to be clear and undamaged and the rears
good too.
Inside, we find the typical early
R107 interior with no head rests, after-market wooden steering wheel and gear
knob, Pioneer radio/cassette and electric windows. We have not removed the hard top to
inspect the soft-top, we were unable to locate the hard-top removal
keys.
The driver’s front footwell/floor section
appears to have had some work done to it, and we note the back of the driver’s
seat is also missing.
The car shows just 68,699
miles which is unsupported, the history file including only the V5C showing two
former keepers and a selection of SORN notices. The V5C states the vehicle was
imported and UK registered in year 2000.
One to
restore, or recommission for sure, but one that also offer considerable
potential investment return given the way values have soared for these R107 SL’s
in recent years and this looks like a good basis to go from.
