Description
NEW LOWER RESERVE; Older restoration; running and
driving; a nice original car to use and enjoy; super interior; refurbished
wheels; good door shuts; rare model
First
registered in Manchester just a few days after the start of World War
Two in September 1939, by 1960 this rare MG VA Saloon (one of only 1,259 made)
was in the hands of an RAF officer in Bedfordshire, according to the buff
continuation logbook on file.
This
then shows a string of short-term owners in the West Country in the mid to late
1960s, the car forming part of a display of cars from 1971 at Spye Park near
Chippenham when acquired by its then-owner, Simon Spicer.
He
gifted it to his friend Mr Humphreys of Usk who was to be its registered keeper
for the next 50 years.
He
enlisted Mike and Tony Hurst of Bristol to restore the car, a process which took
place between 1992 and 1995. Photos on file show a major body restoration,
including new rear wheel arches and much work to the door posts - no doubt the
reason why the doors open and shut so nicely.
It
was repainted at this time (now green from its original black) and has remained
in this state ever since. Plenty of old MOTs on file suggest its mileage could
well be correct at just under 92,000 miles, with few being added between tests.
Fewer than 300 miles have been added since 2013 in fact.
More
recent work has included new wheels and tyres plus remanufactured front door
cards. The water pump has also been replaced.
The
VA starts first time and selects gears nicely. The sweet 1,500 cc engine has
good oil pressure and the car even stops well.
Approaching
84 years of age, this super stylish pre-war gem is solid, complete and full of
patina, exactly as a pre-war car should be.
Paperwork
with the car includes the V5C, buff continuation logbook, some details and
photographs of the restoration work, old tax discs
etc.
