May Sale Report...
A rare taste of history at Brightwells
Buyers at Brightwells’ 2nd May Wine and Spirit Auction welcomed a unique opportunity to taste a rare Cognac dating from 1848. The bottle formed part of an exceptional private collection of French Wines and Spirits, some dating back to the very early 1800’s.
Brightwells’ Head of Wine Sales Paddy Shave said that brandy lovers had come from far and wide to taste the 170 year old spirit. “It was a real privilege to have the chance to taste something so old, happily it more than lived up to expectation”.
The brandy, which was produced before the advent of electricity had been stored in the cellars of a Staffordshire country house for over a century. In all 20 bottles from the 1840s were offered; they all sold to a single London buyer for just over £20,000.
The sale also featured over 150 lots from Bordeaux and Burgundy, a selection of Vintage Port and Champagne and over 200 bottles of fine Malt Whisky.
The top-priced lot on the day was £8,000 for 8 bottles of Domaine de la Romanee Conti La Tache 1969. 12 bottles of Richebourg 1969 from the same Domaine achieved £6,800.
The Malt Whisky section featured two significant private collections from Herefordshire and the Cotswolds. Bidding on some of the rarer Whiskies was intense with homegrown buyers vying with internet bidders from Continental Europe and South East Asia. The highlight of the section was a rare 30 Year Old Macallan Sherry Oak which saw the hammer fall at £2,300.
