Brightwells’ Summer Wine Auction attracts world-wide interest
Over 800 lots of Fine Wine, Vintage Port and Champagne were offered at Brightwell’s Wine Sale on Wednesday 18th July. UK bidders from around the country were joined by online bidders from the US, Hong Kong, Japan and Scandinavia.
Four major private collections from cellars in Shropshire, Staffordshire, Edinburgh and London formed the centrepiece of the sale. A full saleroom ensured a lively atmosphere; the pre-sale tasting proved as popular as ever with over 40 bottles available to sample on the day.
Over 400 lots of classic Bordeaux, Burgundy and Rhone Wines came under the hammer. Highlights included a 12 bottle case of Chateau Lynch Bages which sold in bond at £1000 and 6 bottles of Domaine Romanee Conti La Tache which achieved £2500. A mixed case of Rhone Wines containing 4 bottles of Cornas from Marcel Juge attracted bids from around the world, the lot was eventually sold for £1900.
The sale also featured Vintage Champagnes from the great houses of Ruinart, Roederer, Krug and Dom Perignon. The top priced Champagne lot was 4 bottles of Ruinart 1973 which sold at £1000.
The Port section contained a number of iconic vintages: 12 bottles of Fonseca 1980 sold at £500 and 9 bottles of Butler and Nephew 1954 achieved £1080. A case of 12 Cockburns 1970 was also much in demand with the hammer falling at £780.
The Malt Whisky section of the catalogue attracted private collectors, dealers and specialist retailers from all over the country. The top prices paid on the day were for a bottle of Macallan 20 year old single cask (£500) and 2 bottles of Aberlour 1964 (£490 and £510).
In all the Sale total was over £125,000 with a clearance rate of over 80%.
