Over 1200 lots to be offered at Brightwells’ two-day Summer Wine Sale.
Outstanding collections of Bordeaux, Burgundy and Vintage Port to come under the hammer.

Brightwells will be holding their first 2-day wine sale at the Leominster Salerooms on Wednesday 14th and Thursday 15th August. The sale will begin at 10am on both days.

The sale features three significant private collections from exceptional cellars in Wales, Devon and the East Midlands. Brightwells’ Head of Wine Sales Paddy Shave tells ‘A tale of three cellars’

Amidst the rolling hills of the Welsh countryside, the cellars of a large country house yielded many forgotten treasures. A vast collection of Wine and Port had been purchased over 40 years ago by the vendor’s grandmother and has remained largely undisturbed ever since.

Highlights from the Wine Room included 4 cases of Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1973 (£1,600 - £2,200 each) and 4 cases of Chateau d’Yquem 1970 (£1,500 - £2,000 each).

However even these iconic wines were eclipsed by the contents of the Port Room. We found 400 bottles of Dow, Croft, Taylor and Fonseca from the great years of 1908, 1927, 1935, 1945, 1955 and 1963. Our pre-sale tasting will provide a treat for buyers, featuring Taylor’s 1935, Taylor’s 1955 and Croft 1963.

We took a trip back in time, a sense of history in every breath. The wine cellar – an astonishing collection of fine Bordeaux and Burgundy accumulated over 25 years. The wines were stored in excellent conditions in a grand and romantic medieval building, a monastic relic from Henry VIII’s destruction of the Catholic Church. Given the religious background it is true to say that wine has been drunk here for many hundreds of years; for the benefit of the soul through the Mass and no doubt for the celebration of the flesh on informal occasions. Highlights include 5 Chambertin 1994 from Armand Rousseau (£5,000 - £6,500) and 2 x 12 Romanee St Vivant 1995 from Hudelot Noellat (£2,400 - £3,200 each).

East Midlands

The final tranche from a superb 10 room cellar in the heart of the Leicestershire countryside. Over 300 lots of Bordeaux include Bottles, Magnums,  Double Magnums and Imperials from excellent properties. There is also a delightful parcel of Sancerre, Pouilly Fume and Chablis, perfect for late Summer evenings. Tucked away in a dark corner I discovered 2 bottles of 1838 Cognac in near perfect condition, we expect them to achieve £1,200 - £1,600 each.

The sale will be on view on Monday 12th August, Tuesday 13th and after the Wednesday sale until 5.30pm. There will be a tasting of selected Wines, Ports and Cognacs from 3pm – 7pm on Tuesday 13th and on the morning and evening of the 14th.
