Brightwells’ February Sale attracts worldwide interest
Rare Wine sells for £8,000
A magnum of Chateau Cheval Blanc 1947, one of the finest and rarest wines in the world, sold for £8,000 at Brightwells’ recent auction of Wine, Port, Champagne and Whisky. The sale attracted a record number of bidders from Hong Kong, the US and Scandinavia as well as all around the UK and Ireland.
The auction took place on 20th February at the Leominster Saleroom and featured over 640 lots.
Over 170 lots of Claret were offered. While the Cheval Blanc 1947 was the undoubted star of the show other highlights included a rare bottle of Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1918 (£1,200) and 4 bottles of Chateau Lafite 1982 (£3,200).
The areas of Rhone and Burgundy were also well represented, the top priced Burgundy on the day was 12 bottles of Mommessin Clos de Tart Grand Cru 2003 (£2,700 under bond).
The Port and Champagne Section yielded some excellent results: a parcel of 36 bottles of Fonseca Port from 1934 and 1955 netted over £11,000 and 15 bottles of Pol Roger 1964 inspired bidders to part with over £3,700.
An excellent selection of Malt Whisky, including rarities from Japan and the Scottish Isles proved popular with buyers. Whiskies from the Macallan Distillery continue to attract strong prices, an 18 year old from 1983 surpassed expectations as the hammer fell at £1,450.
Brightwells’ Head of Wine Sales Paddy Shave was very pleased with the results on the day. ‘It was great to see so much excitement in the room. The quality and range on offer created a real buzz’.
