Jewellery Section:
Clients are advised that many coloured gemstones are treated to enhance their properties. For example, heating is commonly used to improve the colour or transparency of rubies and sapphires; oiling is used to enhance clarity of emeralds. Such enhancement procedures are widely accepted by the international jewellery profession. While the colour of heat-treated stones is permanent, oiling may need to be repeated after a number of years in order for emeralds to retain optimum clarity.

Prospective buyers should therefore bear in mind that, unless otherwise stated, such enhancement methods could have been used.

Paintings Section:
Droit  De Suite Royalty Charges §.  All paintings and prints in this auction by artists (of an EU nationality) who have died since 1942 will incur royalty charges, if the hammer price (at current exchange rates) is €1,000 or higher.  The buyer of such lots agree to pay Brightwells this royalty and we shall forward it to the artists' collecting agents.  The rate is 4% of hammer price between €1,000 and €50,000.

Lots marked * will be sold plus VAT on the hammer price

    AFTER CERI RICHARDS. (1903-1971)

facsimile print in colours, (dating from 1975) with full (printed) signature reversed and inverted within plate (bottom left), un-numbered, with margins,
    I. 17 1/4 x 23 in

The original proofs for the 1952 subject were hand-printed by the artist at the Royal College of Art, London.
Subsequently a limited signed and numbered edition of 100 prints, (with blindstamp) were produced; and an un-numbered issue of prints appears to have also been made later. The example at Brightwells is an un-numbered copy of the 1975 handmade facsimile print by Stanley Jones (after Ceri Richards) at the Curwen Studio, for the Observer (of Sanesi 22)

Provenance: Given by Frances Richards to Margaret Pond
                          thence by descent

Ceri Richard's interest in Costermongers on the London streets dated from the early years of the 1930s. He continued to find inspiration from their subject matter for over twenty years representing Costa characters through drawings, paintings and prints. 'In  Hampstead (during the pre-war period) these typically Cockney fruit and vegetable sellers were a familiar sight with their weird attire of feathers, sequins, buttons, and bits of embroidery and tinsel...their strange and fanciful appearance seems to have appealed to Richards's own spirit of Welsh anti-conformism, that was never far from the surface, as well as to his sense of humour' (Sanesi, The Graphic Works of Ceri Richards, p.19 )

    Pl. 15 1/2 x 19 3/4 in

Literature:   Lennox-Boyd, Clarke, and Dixon. The Complete Engraved Works of George Stubbs ARA ,(no.110 state 2)

George Townly Stubbs originally advertised this print at 15s. plain or £ 10s. for proof or colour-printed impressions

The source for the print is the oil painting in the Paul Mellon Collection (Egerton 1978, no.85.) another later version is known, and a watercolour reduction for this print by George Townly Stubbs is also in the Mellon Collection (Egerton and Snelgrove, p. 91 and pl. 51)

The Sporting Magazine (Jan 1794) commentated of Sharke..'A most beautiful as well as a very famous horse: he won five single matches for one thousand guineas each, and upwards of twenty thousand guineas in stakes. He gave Laurel and Postmaster 7lbs. each each for a sweepstake of a thousand guineas over the Beacon Course at Newmarket. The portrait is of Price, who trained him.'

Sharke was bred and owned by Robert Pigott (1736-94) of Chesterton Hall, in Huntingdonshire. Pigot was a sympathiser with the American and French revolutions and an aquaintance of Franklin, Voltaire and Brissot. He is said to have later become 'a zealous Pythagorean, as a vegetarian was than called, and was a dupe of the quack James Graham and his electric bed' (DNB)
Sharke's racing winnings at Newmarket alone totalled over 16000 guineas. The highest sum to that date for any racehorse. He commenced as a stallion at Chesterton Hall in 1779. Later he was sold at Tattersall's to a dealer and exported to Virginia. His first season in America was spent at General Spottiswood's stud at Nottingham near Fredericksburg. His period at stud proved a success and he was later described by a correspondent as doing 'as much to enhance the value of the bloodstock of the United States as any horse ever imported' (American Turf Register, 1830, vol V, p173)

This lot is also sold with a watercolour self-portrait of the artist inscribed 'To my Old Friend Vic (Allan). Drawn after an acute attack of jaundice...with every good wish from Daryl Lindsay, Melbourne Feb 9th (19)20'. (Three photos of the artist are inset verso together with a pen and ink sketch of a soldier in uniform)

    Provenance: Victor P. Allan, Esq
                        Thence by family descent

Daryl Lindsay, prior to the Great War, had worked as a Jackaroo near Calbreni, New South Wales. On the outbreak of war in 1914 he (as did Victor Allan) enlisted in the Australian Army Service Corps. Later Lindsay worked as a driver in the Australian Army Service Corps in France serving there for almost 2 years. During that time he was encouraged to make drawings of life in the trenches. Allan clearly knew him well at this period, making references to him in his own war time diaries. (Australian Govt. Collection).
In 1918 Lindsay was posted to Queen Mary's Hospital, Sidcup, Kent, as a specialist medical artist for the Australian Army. Here he met Henry Tonks who arranged for him to receive further training at the Slade School, London. Lindsay returned to Melbourne in 1919.
Later in life Lindsay became Curator of the National Gallery of Victoria, rising to be Director from 1942-1956. He was knighted in 1965 for 'services to art'.

    ANDREW McCULLUM (1821-1902)
    'The Black Country at Night'
inscribed as title and dated 1889 (lower right)
    watercolour
    18 x 27 in

     Provenance: Private Collection, Aberdeenshire

McCullum studied at the Government School of Design at Somerset House, London where the artists Richard Redgrave and J.C. Horsley were also fellow students. He exhibited at the Royal Academy for the first time in 1850. From 1852-1854 he lived at Stourbridge, where he worked as an art teacher.
Whilst McCullum remains best known as a landscape artist, he also did on occasion paint semi-allegorical subjects. The subject matter of the watercolour at Brightwells shows certain compositional similarities with an earlier oil painting by McCullum at The Manchester City Art Gallery titled 'The River of Life: Death'
In the Brightwell's example the artist depicts a desolate coast by moonlight, with scattered mines and fiery furnaces along a shoreline. In the left foreground a massive wave crashes against a building taking all in its path. The wave contains a swirling group of ghostly figures, rushing towards a seated figure of the Devil and Father Time holding a scythe. It perhaps suggests the artist's premonition of the passage of time for all humanity.

    JOHN ELWYN (1916-1997)
    Welsh Farm Entrance II
signed 'John Elwyn' (lower left),numbered, inscribed and dated on the backboard ' no.5 John Elwyn Compton Road, Winchester, 1977', and further signed and dated on the back of the work
gouache and mixed media on paper,
    12 x 20 in

This work was originally shown at an exhibition, circa 1978, at the house of the artist Norman Thelwell, near Stockbridge

Provenance: Formerly in a Private Collection, Romsey, Hants

Elwyn studied at the Carmarthen School of Art (1933-1937) and also at the Royal College of Art, London. Later he taught at Portsmouth and Winchester Schools of Art.
The artist is perhaps most closely identified with the landscape of West Wales and Cardiganshire which he regularly painted. Much of Elwyn's work encapsulates the Welsh countryside 'as a mixture of vivid green, yellow and orange sunlit buildings, shimmering white washed barns and winding country lanes' (Meyrick). Titles such as 'Off the main Road', 'Cattle between Barns', 'Entrance to a Farm', 'Farm Entrance', or 'Upland Farm' were recurring motifs in Elwyn's work of the 1970's.
This example at Brightwells is of similar date to two other examples of his work which were offered at these salerooms as lots 529 and 530 on 4th November 2015 titled 'Carmarthenshire Farm' and 'Teifi Meadows with the Village of Adpar'
