Introduced in 1972, the Honda XL was a four-stroke 250cc enduro motorcycle and was among the first four-valve single-cylinder bikes built for the mass market.
A dual purpose on/off-road machine with dirt bike looks plus lights and indicators for street use, the revvy single cylinder produced 24hp at the wheel and was a comparative lightweight amongst its period rivals and somewhat more narrow to boot.
Originating from Minnesota, this MY1973 (Jan 1974 registered) Honda XL250 ‘Motorsport Edition’ (produced 1972-1973 only, denoted by engine number beginning 'SL250SE') and its Suzuki TS250 stable-mate, also in today’s sale, were both sourced by specialist US firm, Cycle Search Inc Ohio, from private collections in the US for their present owner to join his collection. They were first registered in the UK in 2011 and then shipped to Sweden to spend time in the vendor’s collection, being used sparingly on Swedish forest trails during a few warm summers.
This bike is in completely original, low mileage condition. A copy of the US title documents from customs control confirm the low mileage of only 2,918 when shipped. The bike currently indicates only 4,277 miles. A new set of Trelleborg/Mitas Enduro tyres were fitted in 2015, along with a thorough service including the fitting of new ignition electronics, carb overhaul kit and fuel system seals.
The bike was registered in Sweden from 2011 until it returned here in 2016. It is NOVA registered and as it was previously registered here, regaining the UK registration should not be an issue. The file includes US title and export documents, invoices for maintenance parts, Swedish registration documents, copy of a V5 and NOVA confirmation.
