First registered in Germany in May 1970, this two-door left-hand-drive Mk1 Escort has more recently been built into an eye-catching Mexico replica.
The car formed part of a small collection of Mk1 Escorts, including Twin Cams and an RS1600, on the Isle of Man. The collection is now being reduced in size due to an impending house move and consequent reduction in storage space.
It's fitted with a 1,600cc Crossflow engine with twin down-draught carburettors* and five-speed gearbox. This ‘overdrive top’ gearbox and MK2 RS2000 back axle make high speed touring a very relaxed exercise compared with the frenetic gearbox/back axle combination of the original Mexico.
The car has recently had an engine overhaul on the Isle of Man by Carrera Classics, who have long experience with sporting Escorts. The car is still being run-in, having covered only 100 miles and so may require subsequent re-tuning.
It comes with its Manx registration document but there is no earlier history. As with mainland Britain, the Isle of Man does not require MOT tests for classics. Registration in this country, if required, will be straightforward and Brightwells will be happy to offer advice to the fortunate new owner.
*AMENDMENT - Should read, a twin downdraught carburettor – it is one downdraught twin barrel carb and not two.
