1983 Porsche 928S

Lovely example of this classic GT; impressive service history; 300bhp 4.7 V8; attractive Chiffon White paint with brown leather interior; 928 number plate

Launched in 1978, the Porsche 928 was aimed squarely at the international jet set and still ignites your cataloguer’s fantasies of storming across Europe with a bootful of dodgy diamonds and a sultry French actress in the passenger seat.
Looking positively futuristic even today, the 928 was initially fitted with a front-mounted 4.5-litre all-alloy V8 driving the rear wheels via a three-speed automatic transaxle for perfect 50:50 weight distribution. With 240bhp on tap, it could launch to 60 in under 7 seconds on its way to a top speed of 143mph. The radical teardrop body shape was mainly galvanised steel but with weight-saving aluminium doors, front wings and bonnet and polyurethane bumpers. Other innovations included a Weissach axle that passively steered the rear wheels in throttle-off cornering for greater road-holding.
It was so well received that it won the 1978 European Car of the Year Award, the only sports car ever to have won this accolade which usually goes to humdrum saloons. It is also the car design that McLaren F1 designer Gordon Murray once said that he admired above all others.
In 1980 the car got better still with the launch of the 928S with a larger 4.7-litre engine now with 300bhp, front and rear spoilers and wider wheels.
First registered in April 1983, this 928S has covered just under 145k miles which is typical of this extremely usable GT which can cover starship mileages with ease so long as it is serviced properly, as this one has been. The original service book is no longer present but a replacement book shows no fewer than 29 stamps from 55,976 miles in May 1988 to 141,583 miles in June 2016, the last 10 services by Porsche specialist Martin Brown of Meriden and most of the others by Autobahn of Coventry and by Parr Porsche of Surrey. This equates to an average service interval of only 3,000 miles by some very reputable specialists – most reassuring!
Our vendor acquired the car three years ago and has continued to look after it properly, fitting new brake discs and pads all round in 2018 along with new gas struts for the boot and the bonnet. In 2019 a set of rear wheel spacers were professionally fitted by Porsche specialists GT One of Chertsey to give it a better stance, along with a new set of locking wheel nuts. They also removed an aftermarket electric cooling fan which was causing a drain on the battery and rebuilt the original viscous coupling cooling fan to get it working properly – an expensive job which most 928 owners have to tackle at some point. Following this the engine was also given a tune-up (ignition timing; idle speed; fuel mixture settings).
The history file contains many invoices back to the early 1990s plus 27 old MOTs back to 1990. The current MOT runs to 20th February 2021 with no advisories recorded. There is also an agreed insurance valuation of £22,000 in 2018.
Finished in attractive Chiffon White (which has a more creamy/yellow hue than is apparent in the photos) with a brown leather interior, this is a most appealing car all round that has been starting promptly and running nicely as we have moved it around on site. The only real faults we noted are a dent in the LH sill just in front of the rear wheel and a split in the folds of the front passenger seat squab, as can be seen in the photos. You will also have spotted that it has a rather nice 928S number plate.
Long overshadowed by the air-cooled 911, the 928 has only recently begun to be properly appreciated by collectors and prices have risen accordingly. Many fell into the wrong hands when they were cheap so there are plenty of bad ones out there. Far better to spend a bit more on a good one, with a continuous maintenance history like this, which invariably works out cheaper in the long run!
