Full Description

2003 Smart Roadster 80 (W452)

Funky, lightweight and big on the fun factor; electric fabric roof with removable side bars; showing just 49,102 miles

Supplied new by Mercedes-Benz of Edmonton in September 2003 this funky little W452 series Smart Roadster packs a turbocharged 698cc 3-cylinder engine, developing here, 80bhp - more than enough to give this 790kg featherweight exciting performance, driving the rear wheels via 6-speed single clutch automated manual transmission with tiptronic and fully automatic modes.

Hailing from the first year of production this example is finished in two-tone red and black and features the clever eletric fabric roof with removable side rails permitting full targa option or simply sunroof back mode.  Showing just 49,102 miles covered by its 5 owners, the current since October 2019, this compact little car offers comfortable seating for two with both front and rear boot storage, granted the rear 'boot' is rather shallow given it sits atop the engine. Providing exciting performance with a level of economy not usually associated with a sports car  - Smart's ethos was to provide 'the emotion of driving a pure sport's car at an affordable cost' - more than 41,000 Roadsters were sold, it even won Top Gear's accolade of "Fun Car of the Year 2005".

Within the history file, we find the V5C, owner's pack & service book showing 5 stamps, the last at 22,000 miles in May 2009  costing £416 by a Smart main dealer with a further lube service documented on an invoice dated May 2020 costing £135 including replacement gearbox oil and NSF lower ball joint. There are 7 old MOTs and current MOT valid until October 2021 with 1 advisory for tyres, although this looks to have been addressed with the purchase two new 185/55 tyres in October 2020.

Presenting well in its funky two-tone colour scheme and attractive 6-spoke alloy wheels, the only obvious cosmetic hiccup we noticed was the bonnet which looks to have been vinyl wrapped with signs of microblistering evident, as pictured. That aside, it looks to be a tidy, low mileage example ready to be enjoyed.
