1967 Ford Mustang 289 GT Convertible

Manual transmission; vintage burgundy body; standard black vinyl bucket seats; imported from New York in January this year; NOVA reference in file

Just as the Aston Martin DB5 was immortalised by Sean Connery's James Bond, so the Ford Mustang achieved automotive nirvana in the hands of Steve McQueen's Lt Frank Bullitt, hurtling through the streets of San Francisco in the greatest car chase ever filmed. To be fair to the car though, it had already taken America by storm, selling over one million units within 18 months of its April 1964 launch, four years before Bullitt put the icing on what was already an irresistible cake.

Available in such a variety of forms, this particular convertible was originally produced in May, 1967. Imported from New York in January this year, the door plaque and associated Marti report confirm it to be ’67, built at Metuchen as a 289-2V V8 engined machine and still in its original guise of burgundy red and black vinyl seats. It also states that it was originally a three-speed manual and although it is certainly the more exciting manual variant, it does now have four gears to choose from.

As is so often the case with American imports, there is little or no history or invoices from its time in the States, apart from a section of the original registration document and the above mentioned Marti report.

The photographs show a fair overall idea of the condition. The burgundy body is in pretty good shape, although the foot wells and sills will need some future attention. The interior is all there and nicely scruffy which we quite like, but the rear of the hood obviously needs some work. That is, if you intend to use the hood?? Come on…..
