Full Description

1969 Land Rover S2a 88"

Later 200TDi engine fitted; useful workhorse in good running order

The successor to the immortal Series 1, the Series 2 was produced from 1958 to 1961 and came in 88-inch and 109-inch wheelbases, using the tried-and-tested 2.25 litre petrol engine. It was replaced by the very similar Series 2a in 1961 which remained in production for 10 years and is widely regarded as the most hardy of all the Series models.
There were some minor cosmetic changes, but the most significant change was under the bonnet in the guise of the new 2.25 litre diesel engine which was offered as an option. Body configurations ranged from SWB soft top to the top of the line five-door Station Wagon. From February 1969 the headlamps moved into the wings on all models, and the sill panels were redesigned to be shallower a few months afterwards.
First registered in Hertfordshire in March 1969, this S2a 88" has the headlamps in the wings and was originally a petrol model but has at some point been fitted with a later 2.5 litre 200Tdi diesel engine. Nothing is known of the history of the vehicle, our vendor acquiring it last summer to do a few jobs around his smallholding, a role which it has fulfilled admirably.
He states that it has proved totally reliable, always starting easily and running well, although he advises that the lights don’t work, something that he has never bothered to investigate as it doesn’t go out on the road much and you can’t get much farming done in the dark! As you can see in the photos, it appears to be basically sound if rather scruffy, with various non-original features such as the steering wheel and the seats which are probably rather more comfortable than they would have been when it left the factory 50 years ago…
On offer here at a modest guide price, it will be a handy bit of kit to have around for farm work or runs to the dump.
