1997 Volvo 940 Celebration

Run-out top-spec model of the run-forever 940 - the only car you will ever need; manual box; MOT Feb 2022; recent cambelt and major service

The Volvo 940 was a great car, loved by all those who owned them for their uncompromising shape, huge ability and tough construction. Now regarded as ‘old school cool’, for years they were dismissed by the image conscious as cars for old people with Labradors – surely a good reason for wanting one now!

In 1997 the ‘Celebration’ special edition was introduced to boost demand for the runout, management believing at the time that the car would need a boost to keep the factory busy up to the changeover to the new model. They hadn’t factored on their loyal buyers rushing to get their hands on the last of the ‘real’ RWD Volvos, the 1,700 or so ordered for the UK market being snapped up in just a few days.

The Celebration came with a raft of goodies, including alloy wheels, an ‘egg-crate’ grill, half leather, wood trim, heated seats, heated front screen, radio upgrade and more. Available as a manual or auto, the majority were supplied with the latter option so the manual we have on offer today is relatively rare.

Showing just over 133,000 miles from new, it is still under ‘Volvo half-life’ and will carry on carrying on for many years to come. It carries a no advisory MOT until February 2022 and comes with service invoices dating back to 2016, not long after the car came into the current owner’s hands. The V5C shows four previous keepers.

In 2016 it had a new radiator, a track rod end the following year, the other side a year later with general servicing taking place too. In 2020 it got new rear springs and shocks at the time of MOT and in September 2020 the head was removed, resurfaced and refitted with a new gasket, new cambelt and alternator drive belt etc…along with an oil service – costing £931.

This smart looking Celebration is now firmly in ‘Modern Classic’ territory, offering practical, reliable and comfortable motoring for all the family…
