Biggest ever wine sale

Brightwells’ biggest ever wine sale attracts worldwide interest.

A superb collection of Claret formed the centrepiece of Brightwells’ latest auction of Wine, Port, Champagne and Whisky which took place on Wednesday 18th May.

The collection, offered in bond by a wine investor from Wales, achieved over £110,000 and included some of the most iconic wines in the world. The great Chateaux of Lafite, Latour, Margaux and Mouton Rothschild formed the main part of the list although the top price on the day fell to a 12 bottle case of Chateau Lafleur a Pomerol which achieved £10,864. Bidding was intense with a full saleroom as well as commission, telephone and internet bidders from around the world.

Other highlights from this collection included 12 bottles of Lafite ’98 at £5,488, 12 bottles of Lafite ’96 at £7,392, 12 bottles of Latour ’03 at £6,720 and 12 bottles of Latour ’09 at £7,616. Many of these wines were purchased by London investment companies, the remainder falling into private hands.

Vintage Ports also proved very popular with a venerable collection of 12 bottles from the sought after 1945 vintage reaching a combined total of just under £3,000.

The highlight of the Champagne section was 4 bottles of Krug Vintage 1981 selling at £1,344.
The Whisky section included an exceptional private collection of rare malts from the 1960’s and 1970’s, with the top price achieved being a limited edition Bowmore 1968 which sold at £1,232.

With a clearance rate of over 85% and an average lot price in excess of £500, the auction proved to be Brightwells’ biggest ever Wine Sale.

“Private collections always generate huge media and buyer interest, and our success with this result was no exception. With extensive marketing exposure in the press and on the internet, we believe our clients have benefitted from a quick and fruitful path to the market, and it was really encouraging seeing so many private and investor buyers having so much interest in this latest auction,” commented Brightwells’ Wine Expert, Paddy Shave

“The first stage in the process is our free valuation service. Once we have agreement and items are in the catalogue I speak to a lot of our buyers directly, fielding requests for technical information and provenance. Our vendors have confidence in the comprehensive service that we offer and peace of mind in the knowledge that all pay-outs are guaranteed”.

All prices quoted include Buyer’s Premium at 12%
Brightwells’ next Wine Sale is on September 7th.
