Team WS: Teamwork makes the Dream Work
When the Wilson sisters first saw the grey stallion Daminos they thought he was special enough to venture to the furthest corner of the globe to view him, and were thrilled when they were able to place the winning bid on behalf of their owners, Team WS.
It has been a huge few weeks for the Wilson family, after a video of a young stallion jumping on YouTube caught the eye of eldest sister Vicki in early August. It was of Daminos, a breathtaking Holstein Approved grey stallion, who was nothing short of exceptional and was going under the hammer at Brightwells Elite Auction in the UK just two weeks later. Vicki immediately showed her sisters and it was quickly agreed that this was a horse that could fulfill their Olympic dreams.
The timing was near perfect, after six months of development the Wilson sisters, Vicki, Kelly and Amanda, were ready to launch their latest initiative, Team WS. This is a Joint Ownership venture aiming to acquire, and then produce an elite team of Jumpers unrivalled in New Zealand. With the new goal of bringing Daminos home, Team WS was finalised just days before the auction on the 20th August, and catapulted into action. Just a few days later it seemed very appropriate, after a late night watching the Jumping at the Olympics, that Vicki and Amanda boarded a plane to the UK in search of horses to make their own international dreams come true.
The Elite August Auction in Addington, UK, is an annual event with an outstanding record for selling top class young horses that have gone on to achieve success on the world stage. It is a collaboration of the best three year-olds that have been independently selected from studs in the UK, Belgium, Holland and Germany.
Vicki and Amanda were overwhelmed with the quality of horsepower and strongly believed that the majority of horses would be top competitors in New Zealand, but after two days of viewing, vetting and handling the 67 horses, a short list of five was selected; among them was Daminos. The game plan was simple, aiming to purchase the best two within budget, as the inaugural Team WS horses.
On auction night family, friends and owners in New Zealand curled up in blankets at 4am to watch the Live Streamed Auction; tension and excitement was building in both hemispheres. After the lengthy free-jumping and auctioning process Amanda and Vicki were fortunate enough to walk away with not just two, but their top three horses and they couldn’t be more excited.
- Lot 17, Quintesse Z; a stunning chestnut, Quantum – Cassini 11 – Heartbreaker mare by the name of.
- Lot 54, Daminos; the spectacular grey stallion from Diarado – Cachas – Carolus 1 bloodlines.
- Lot 59, Carpaccio BDV Z; another phenomenal grey stallion with Clintissimo Z – Indoctro – Apollonius xx breeding, affectionately known as ‘Elvis’.
Purchasing horses of this quality has never been an option financially for the sisters. All of the Jumpers that Vicki and Amanda currently compete were wild cards that others had given up on, or had seen no potential in; the sisters have had to develop the skills needed to recognise and produce their hidden talents. Although these horses are now among some of the highest performing Jumpers in New Zealand, Vicki and Amanda knew they now needed to be looking for horses that are capable of competing with success internationally, if they were going to reach their eventual goals of competing at the World Equestrian Games, Global Champions Tour and Olympics.
To make these dreams a reality the Wilson sisters came up with an exciting and innovative concept that they believe will revolutionise the nation’s Jumping industry at the same time as helping them achieve their goals. This concept was Team WS – an invitation-only collaboration of owners who share the same core principles, visions and goals. People who are committed to helping the sisters achieve international success while being equally as passionate about supporting and improving the quality of Jumping within New Zealand.
“An initiative like this is unprecedented in New Zealand, but we strongly believe that together we can achieve more than any one person could alone. It’s a fabulous opportunity to unite riders, owners and breeders; anyone who is passionate about the sport,” says Kelly, the middle Wilson sister, who with her extensive business and marketing experience will spearhead the management of Team WS.
Team WS aims to be a community; formed by building a close-knit group of people who share a love of horses and a desire for excellence. Every horse purchased by Team WS will have strong potential as an international Jumper, and will be developed through to the highest levels of competition in New Zealand before going on to campaign on the world stage.
“Having horsepower of this quality underneath us is an incredible opportunity” say Amanda, the youngest Wilson. “If these three young horses are setting the precedent for what is to come, then we cannot wait to see what the future holds for Team WS”.
To the first owners that have come on board to support the Team WS initiative, Vicki says, "A huge thanks guys. You're making our dreams a reality."
