Pre-Christmas Wine Sale Report
Strong trade on Bordeaux, Vintage Port and Malt Whisky at Brightwells’ pre-Christmas Wine Sale.
An excellent catalogue including first growth Bordeaux, Vintage Port and rare Malt Whisky was offered at Brightwell’s Wine Sale on 30th November.
In all over 650 lots were presented, with private collectors, merchants, dealers and restaurateurs all registering to bid. A full sale room ensured a lively atmosphere, with many more clients bidding online, by commission or by telephone.
The Red Bordeaux section of just over 100 lots proved very popular with a clearance rate of over 90%. The best price for a single lot on the day was £6,800 for a case of Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1986. Other highlights included a single bottle of Petrus 1970 which achieved £1,000 and 6 bottles of Chateau La Mission Haut Brion 1975 which sold at £1,300.
Vintage Port tends to be very popular at Christmas and this year was no exception. Over 60 lots were offered in the Port section and the clearance rate was 100%. 12 bottles of Graham’s 1963 sold at £1,550 and 10 bottles of Fonseca 1966 achieved £1,000.
The Malt Whisky section of the catalogue attracted private collectors, dealers and specialist retailers from all over the country. Limited edition, single cask whiskies and rare older bottlings formed much of the section. A Springbank 1966 achieved the top whisky price of the day at £1,900, closely followed by a Glenfarclas 1954 Single Cask which went under the hammer for £1,600.
Brightwells’ Wine Consultant, Paddy Shave, was very pleased with the result of the sale. “Our clients seemed to really enjoy the range of items on offer. The pre-sale tasting was particularly well attended! In all the Sale total was just under £100,000 with a clearance rate of over 80%.”
