Riley Amilcar Special sailed past its estimate
This year, Brightwells’ June sale was held during Classic and Sports Car Show in association with Flywheel. Record crowds attended, no doubt influenced by the incredible weather which meant that the Brightwells Hangar was an uncharacteristic 28 degrees.
With a 100 strong entry, covering Brightwells’ usual wide mix of items on offer, free viewing on Saturday encouraged thousands through the door to view, many returning on the Sunday to bid for the items that had caught their eye the day before.
Star of the show was the stunning Riley Amilcar Special, which created a huge amount of pre-sale interest. Sailing past its £60,000 - £80,000 estimate to sell for a commission inclusive £132,160, to a phone bidder. Competition was spirited with much theatre created in the room and we are delighted for the vendor, who was very pleased with the outcome!
Of the 14 pre-war cars on offer, 11 found new owners, a fine pair of Austin 12 tourers selling for a commission inclusive £13,200 and £13,780 apiece. An ex-Australian Crossley 15/30 tourer with Holden bodywork sold for a sensible £14,300 and while we are on the subject of open four-seaters, the well restored 1923 Dodge 4 made £14,000.
A long-wheelbase post-Vintage Austin 7 Ulster replica, with some tidying to do made an inclusive £12,320, while a pretty 1928 Chummy was hammered down to a Brightwells regular for £13,100.
One of the star pre-war lots was undoubtedly the ‘Barn find’ MG SA Charlesworth Tourer. One of just seven known to have survived, it sold for £19,040 to a UK buyer after much foreign interest. Remarkably complete, despite 60 years of hibernation, its new owner was delighted to have secured this fine top-notch project.
Popular wisdom is that pre-war cars have dropped in popularity in recent years, although yet again, Brightwells have achieved a near 80% sale rate for this genre of car. The Bicester Heritage Venue and the knowledge and understanding of the team for cars of this era proving yet again that ‘popular wisdom’ can be ‘fake news’.
Other notable results were a 4,400 mile from new AC ME3000 which sold for a healthy £22,960 and a 1971 Aston DBS for £24,640 – which looks cheap on the surface, but the car had been in storage for many years, had lost its roof and was fitted with a V12 engine from the stable of the leaping cat!
While on the subject of Astons, a post-sale deal saw the 1990 Virage, with a list of recommissioning work to do, head for Europe for £22,400.
A gorgeous Radford converted Bentley MkVI was hotly contested to £45,360, the car literally including a kitchen sink. It’s condition certainly helped, as did the plethora of gizmos which also included a hidden brolly, scent bottles, folding rear seats and of course a drinks cabinet.
Both Jaguar 3.8 MkIIs sold, the very smart BRG MOD model making £32,500 while white Auto with Ambla seats made £20,000, the difference reflecting the spec chosen by its first owner back in 1963.
There was plenty of choice for the American car enthusiast, our favourite being the UK supplied from new RHD Galaxie Sunliner. In delightfully original condition and making the right burbling noise from the exhausts, its new owner paid £16,250 for the pleasure of squeezing it into his large garage.
In fact, V8s did well during the sale, a barn-find Jensen CV8 selling for £21,800 and an MG RV8 being hotly contested to £18,700.
To cap it off, it was also a busy day for Rover products, a stunningly restored two-owner P2 Tourer – one of 200 such cars, made £25,200, a freshly and well-restored Land Rover Lightweight sold for £15,680 and the gorgeous and original 80” Series I from 1949 made a predicted £21,850.
