Plant, Machinery & HGV December Sale Report

So that’s it for another month & another year! 2020 has been a different year for everyone but a seemingly good year for machinery prices, and a very good year to be selling at our auction (even if I do say so myself!) The shutdown of many production plants and factories, coupled with the weak value of the pound and high levels of machine export has led to a seriously low supply of used machinery. Add to that a busy year in the construction industry which meant a strong demand for workable equipment. The result has been a truly spectacular display of market forces in action with bidding wars happening on every type of used machine and vehicle!

Our most recent sale last Friday was no exception to this strong trade. We had another exceptional clearance rate and saw more strong prices. Bidder registrations were well above average for the year and we were delighted to see yet more new customers coming to source their used equipment with us. Our marketing push and strong social media presence puts us right at the forefront of the market, and the provenance of much of the equipment we offer gives buyers a great deal of confidence when bidding.

Construction plant came to us from all over the UK yet again this month. There was an excellent variety of machines there and we saw plenty of it selling well over reserves. The standout lot for me was an old, imported Komatsu PC55. This was a sister machine to one which sold last month and looked a little rougher. It sold for 30% more than the same machine did last sale, this was a huge improvement on that kind of value of plant and completely wowed the vendor as well. He had been watching his machine sell online and on phoning him to tell him the good news he said he was just picking himself up off the floor, having fallen off his chair in amazement! This wasn’t the only story of extremely similar machines having risen in value. Although entries were down a little bit on November’s auction, we were still delighted to witness bids coming in thick and fast from both new & regular buyers.

Our line up of tractors was another brilliant cross section of old & new, large & small, machines of all colours & purposes! We again saw entries from a variety of customers and they were bid on by hundreds of different potential purchasers. We had private entries selling to end users, finance companies selling to main agents, trade entries selling to traders & even foreign consignments selling to UK contractors! Our fantastic product knowledge as well as our network of purchasers puts us in a perfect position to draw out the best bids for second hand tractors in our fully reserved auction.

This month saw a lot of vans, pick ups & light commercials mixed in with our HGV section. The trade was extremely strong with a vast crossover in client base between our agricultural buyers, our construction buyers and our commercial vehicles buyers all vying to be the top bidders on pick ups & vans. Municipal and heavy goods vehicles all made strong money as well. Plant lorries & refuse collection vehicles sold well & commanded some of the best prices of the day. This section has now had a very good thinning out and we are looking to refill in time for our next auction on the 15th January. Do get in touch for any fleet management assistance we can offer.

Utility vehicles were in high demand again, we had a good selection direct from Enterprise Holdings, the star of which was a 2018 amphibious 8 wheeler! Unfortunately there was very little grounds maintenance equipment to go round in this sale… We anticipate this section beginning to grow in size again as we get nearer to spring 2021. General farm machinery had another good day and continues to perform well as farmers look for alternatives to costly brand new equipment to make use of. There was a shortage of trailers in November’s auction, this definitely wasn’t the case for December. We were overfilled in this section and purchasers made the most of this, filling their boots & yet again, we ended the day with not a single Ifor Williams unsold!

This year has presented new and interesting challenges in the need to sell online only for much of it. We have had no problem rising to the challenge and indeed seen demand rocket and confidence in using our systems grow. Our regular buyers have embraced the new technology and the march of progress & we have welcomed hundreds of new customers as both buyers & vendors. We continue to provide market leading services, achieving national record prices for some of the top leasing firms, government agencies, councils, hire fleets, contractors, main agents and finance companies.
