1975 Volkswagen Car Transporter

NOT SOLD

One-off build with its own chassis no. issued by DVLA; Subaru Legacy boxer power to the rear axle; built by VW restoration specialist to carry classics but rarely used; requires IVA completion; very cool indeed

Ever felt the need for a VW T2 based car transporter with three axles and six wheels? What about one that’s powered not by an air-cooled VW unit, but by a powerful Subaru boxer lump instead? Created after years of planning by a reputable Gloucestershire-based VW restoration shop to carry-round newly completed and restored T2’s, Splitty’s and customised Beetles, while showing off their restoration skills at the same time, this unique car-carrier was finished a couple of years ago and used as intended. Unfortunately, some kind soul reported the truck to the DVLA who said it needed its own, brand new chassis number as it was so extensively modified. As a result, its use was immediately curtailed while the majority of the changes required for a new commercial vehicle registration and IVA tests were completed. This was as far as our man got before it started eating up too much time and he lost his way in a morass of bureaucracy. As a result, the truck has remained unused for the last year. The newly issued chassis number DVLASWA3971803002 has been affixed to the rear chassis, its original VW chassis number binned and the truck now awaits its final IVA presentation and completion. Power comes from a naturally aspirated, rear mounted Subaru Legacy 2.0 boxer engine driving the rear-most axle only. Access to this is provided by removable sections in the beaver tail and from underneath. The gearbox is the from the original November 1975 VW T2 it's based on, as are the axles, front beam, brakes, dashboard and seats. There is a mounting point for a winch and lashing points to secure whatever you carry - up to 3.5 tonnes. The history file includes the old V5C, invoices, DVLA correspondence, IVA paperwork and other sundry paperwork along with images of the build.
