1991 Ford Fiesta RS Turbo (MkIII)

90's Hot Hatch Nirvana in classic Diamond White with invoices for vehicle set-up at 14psi boost - Investment Alert!

Dating from August 1991 this little bit of 90’s Hot Hatch Nirvana looks ever so cool in period white with green stripe moulding sitting on its original three-spoke 14” alloy wheels.

Under the bonnet of the MkIII RS Turbo you would find (when new, in stock form) Ford’s 1.6 litre CVH engine as found in the XR2i, with the addition of a Garrett T2 turbocharger giving 8psi of boost and an air-to-air intercooler resulting in 133bhp and zero to 60mph time in period of 7.9 seconds – quite the hot hatch back then.

J630 CGP has seen, as with many RS Turbos, some modifications, with a selection of bills on file hinting at increased boost and an assortment of other upgrades which can be seen on the car.  Within the history file, we find a bill dated April 2012 which refers to a rolling road test, check and set up at 14psi by RE Performance Centre of Bury, new water pump in 2013, Powerflex performance bushes, service items and timing belt kit in 2019 (the latter from Burton Ford specialist), another rolling road tune in 2001, 3” stainless steel sports back box, lowering springs and dump valve in Yr.2000 and Clifford Alarm installation certificate dated November 2000.

There are a few other sundry bills dating back to 1994 and 17,000 miles recorded but another of note is conversion to ‘Phase Zero’ spec by Power Engineering of Uxbridge in October 2010 at a cost of £471 with subsequent rolling road set up a few days later by the same outfit. Furthermore, it would appear the engine might have been rebuilt following a statement made by Motorsport Developments who looked at the car in July 2010 who said, “Due to the engine being very fresh, we are advised to only complete a simple check-over and brief set-up to allow you to complete a running in period before the vehicle is returned for a full set-up”. We note, it looks like the Turbo has been changed for a larger Garrett unit along with other visible mods inline with the increase in boost pressure from standard. 

Their invoices at 88,766 miles in 2010 refer to the boost being set at 14psi and a replacement fuel pump (Walbro) being fitted and later full engine management set up including wideband fuelling check. In addition, we find the V5C revealing 16 former owners, four old MOTs plus current valid until January 2023 recording just one advisory for both front lower arm bushes split at 18,644 miles (117,968 miles).  It would appear from looking at the MOT history the car has been in storage off the road between 2014 and 2019 with only c.720 miles covered between these occasions.

The car looks cool and sounds super, throaty and potent and was driven to the sale.  Inside, you will have noticed the driver’s door card is not affixed but is present along with various other parts and bits in the boot.  An after-market boost gauge has also been fitted in place of the right-hand centre dash vent but the seats look to be original and in good order.

Ready to be enjoyed and brought back up to where it could and should be, these RS Turbos have really started to fly in value following their bigger brother the Escort RS Turbo in the upward value trend. A proper blue collar Modern Classic hero and one with a sound investment (and enjoyment) future.
