1950 Pontiac Silver Streak Coupe
Reputedly
one-family-owned from new until 2008; current owner 14 years; older restoration
in lovely condition throughout
Part of
Pontiac’s Streamliner range, the Silver Streak was marketed by GM as 'the most
beautiful thing on wheels'. It got its name from the parallel chromium ribs that
raced up the vertical grille and streaked on across the bonnet and the boot to
give an impression of speed and glamour.
Positioned between the budget Chevrolet range and the more upmarket
Buick models, the Pontiac Silver Streak was an affordable luxury car that looked
a million dollars, especially in fastback two-door Coupe form, as here. It also
offered plenty of performance from its 3.9-litre flathead six engine which was
mated to a three-speed manual column-change gearbox.
Looking gorgeous in green metallic, this 1950 Silver Streak Coupe
was reputedly bought new by a Pontiac executive in Michigan and remained in his
family right up until 2008 when it was imported to the UK by a collector in
whose name it has remained ever since.
Although
there is no real history with the car, it has clearly been well-restored at some
point in the not-too-distant past and it really does look great with excellent
paint and chrome and a beautifully trimmed blue/grey cloth interior. It is
showing 75,959 miles on the clock which is believed to be correct and the engine
ticks over very sweetly indeed.
The Indian
Chief bonnet mascot still lights up when the headlights are on and the art deco
handles which swivel the combined door mirrors/spot lamps still function
perfectly. As good underneath as it us up top, it sailed through its MOT in
January this year with no advisories recorded, an online check showing that it
has covered around 8,000 miles since arriving in the UK and has never had any
MOT advisories.
Starting promptly and driving remarkably well as we have moved it
around on site, this wonderful slice of Fifties Americana will turn heads and
drop jaws wherever it goes. We like it a lot!
