1992 Mercedes-Benz 300SL-24
Rarer, 24-valve 231bhp variant of the 300 with factory hard-top showing 93,439 miles; scope to improve
Dating from August 1992, this Mercedes 300SL-24 is the rarer multi-valve version, produced for only 3 or so years. It was replaced by the SL320 in 1994.
Under the bonnet of this attractive (and rare to find) red example, we find a high-revving naturally aspirated 3.0-litre M104 DOHC 24-valve straight-six engine which develops 228bhp at 6,300 rpm (compared to the ‘standard’ 12-valve SOHC 300SL which made 188bhp at 5,700rpm).
The car looks well bar some areas of lacquer peel requiring remediation and sits upon a set of AMG Monoblock replica alloy wheels with staggered fitment which set the car off well. Inside, there is beige leather trim with electric seat operation, walnut trim, optional rear seats, electric windows, electric mirrors, climate control, heated rear screen, headlamp wash-wipe and electric soft-top with removable factory hard top (which we have not removed).
The car shows 93,439 miles, the interior bearing some signs of age and miles with some wear evident to the driver’s bolster and some signs of sag to the hard top head-lining.
The history file includes the V5C revealing eight former keepers to our vendor who has owned this SL for the last six years, the owner’s manual, three old MOTs and the current, valid until August 2022 recording four advisories (enter the reg online at check-mot.service.gov.uk). The MOT history reveals the car has seen very little use covering only c.400 miles in the last four years.
Ready to be used, with some gentle recommissioning likely in order along with a service as none are documented, these earlier 300SL-24’s go well and offer similar real world performance to the V8 version with greater exclusivity and better fuel economy.
