1961 Chevrolet Corvair Greenbrier
Wow - isn't
this the grooviest van ever? Canadian import; scope to turn it into what you
want; interesting alternative to a VW Camper
Dating from 1961 this most appealing van is a Chevrolet Corvair
Greenbrier Sportswagen to give it its full title.
Purchased by our vendor from a farm dispersal sale while on
vacation in Ontario, Canada in Spring 2021, it remained with his chum in
Winnipeg until he worked out how to get it to the UK.
Purchased in the current state, the Canadian owner had begun to
restore it with a camper conversion as the end goal, but he died before it was
finished (hence the disbursement sale) although looks to have spent some money
on the shell which looks remarkably solid including the
underside, brakes and suspension.
Our man
got it back and removed the tank to clean it and also the carbs following time
standing, and found the clutch is slow to return – to the extent we have been
unable to drive it around on site, but fortunately it rolls with ease, the
engine starting and running.
Our vendor also
got it UK registered and had it MOTd for that process using the Vin
number. The history file includes
the V5C, dating confirmation from the ACUK (American Cars UK) club confirming it
to be from 1961, an R126 Greenbrier model built in St.Louis.
The engine lives under the rear floor area and is the 2,372cc flat
six cylinder “Chevrolet Turbo-Air Six” engine (it’s not turbocharged) and is an
air-cooled unit that develops c98bhp as a 1961 version with three-speed manual
transmission.
With six doors, access is very
good and a bare interior, the choice is yours on what to do with it – it could
make an epic day van, or camper conversion or just something phenomenally cool
to rock around in as a daily or bit of summer fun.
