Description
2004 MG-ZT 1.8T
Believed to be just 1 of 2
pre-production prototype examples for Euro4 Emissions testing that found their
way on to the road with prototype electronic throttle pulled out of long term
storage - one for the proper MG enthusiast/collector
Dating from August 2004 this silver MG ZT is believed to be (as yet
unsubstantiated) one of the pre-production 1.8 Turbo examples, so identified by
the car having an unusual electronic throttle arrangement, reputedly to enable
it to comply with the Euro4 emission targets – where as ‘normal’ models used a
conventional system and did not conform.
The
vendor believes its one of just two ZT160’s that escaped from the factory in
2004 and were road registered. The
internet and forums are awash with ideas, rumour and stories - some links to
which are at the bottom.
That aside, the car
was pulled from storage after several years off the road in storage and is now
offered for sale with a recent MOT valid until September 2023 recording three
minor advisories, also showing the car to have covered only c.8,000 miles since
2012.
Under the bonnet, as we mention is the
1.8 litre turbocharged Rover K-series engine developing 158bhp and 215NM of
torque driving the front wheels via five-speed manual transmission. You may spot
the differing location of the coolant bottle compared to a 'normal' ZT on this
car too, along with the electronic throttle system.
Inside, we find figure hugging half leatherette sports seats with
manual adjustment, air conditioning, Kenwood radio/CD player, electric windows
and electric seats. We also note fitment of 18inch 'Hairpin' alloy wheels
usually found on earlier cars, which is common with the other of the two Euro4
prototypes.
The car shows just 70,188 miles and
presents well bar a couple of minor marks as pictured and some ill-fitment of
the front bumper to the wings also as pictured. The car started and ran well as we moved
it around for these images but did have a tendency to randomly cut-out, but
seemed to re-start promptly – given the car has been off the road for four years
or so, it would no doubt benefit from a thorough check over and service before
being used regularly again on the road.
The
history file includes the V5C revealing five former keepers, six old MOTs and a
selection of invoices for historic works undertaken including a re-built head in
2008 and parts purchased.
