Dating from 1961 this most appealing van
is a Chevrolet Corvair Greenbrier Sportswagen to give it its full
title.
Purchased by our vendor from a farm
dispersal sale while on vacation in Ontario, Canada in Spring 2021, it remained
with his chum in Winnipeg until he worked out how to get it to the
UK.
The Canadian owner had begun to restore it
with a camper conversion as the end goal, but he died before it was finished
(hence the dispersal sale) although he looks to have spent some money on
the shell which appears remarkably solid including the
underside, brakes and suspension.
Our
vendor got it back to the UK and removed the fuel tank to clean it and also
the carbs following time standing, fixed the clutch and adjusted the throttle
cable. The van starts, runs and drives well, sounding really rather
throaty and pulling well.
Our vendor also got
it UK registered and had it MOTd for that process using the VIN
number. The history file includes
the V5C, dating letter from the ACUK (American Cars UK) club confirming it
to be from 1961, an R126 Greenbrier model built in St Louis.
The engine lives under the rear floor area and is the 2,372cc
flat-six 'Chevrolet Turbo-Air Six' engine (it’s not turbocharged), an air-cooled
unit that develops c.98bhp as a 1961 version with four-speed manual
transmission.
With six doors, access is very
good and the rear load area is stripped out so the choice is yours on
what to do with it – it could make an epic day van, or camper conversion or just
something cool to rock around in as a daily or bit of summer fun.
