Description
Well presented 406 having had recent care and attention; sound
bodywork; a distinctive Gentleman's Express
First registered in
September 1961, this 406 was living near Swindon by the mid '70s,
moving to Suffolk in 1976. It changed hands again in 1981, moving to Brighton
before joining the Brian May collection in 2011 from where it was purchased by
our vendor last year.
Nine old MOTs are on file, the earliest dating from
1984 at which time it was showing an entirely plausable 48,646 miles. This
figure has increased gradually to the current indicated 52,652 miles so it has
only covered some 4,000 miles in the last 40 years.
There is also a
continuation buff logbook, old style V5 and current V5C. The file also includes
an original instruction manual.
When acquired in 2023, it was essentially
complete but had been partially dismantled for work. Our vendor has re-instated
the removed trim, the interior remaining in largely good and original
condition bar the front headrests - the seats having been re-Connolised at some
point in the past and displaying some signs of age/cracking as seen in the
photos.
The exterior trim is complete and in very good condition,
including the bumpers, badges and grille. The car is up and running, showing a
few minor blemishes to the paintwork and looks good and solid underneath and
with nicely finished inner wheel arches. The vendor has attended to a number of
small jobs as witnessed in the battery compartment, which along with the spare
wheel compartment on the other side are nicely presented.
Bidders will
already have noticed the crack in the screen, but we also advise that the
driver's door doesn't latch properly and the brakes, although are working, are
not up to scratch so it is not in a state to drive away.
Already in a
nice state of preservation, it has potential to be a prime example should
its lucky new owner decide to lift it to the next level.
The 406 was
to many the ultimate Gentleman's Express of the early '60s, offering
distinctive looks in a super-sophisticated package.
