new; highly original; lovingly maintained and in regular use; lots to
like!
Hillman launched
its first Minx way back in 1932 and a model with that mischievous name was to
remain in production right up until 1970, going through a bewildering number of
phases along the way.
As the name suggests, the
Minx was traditionally a pert and dainty car, but in 1961 a somewhat larger
model was announced called the ‘Super Minx’ to ensure people knew of its loftier
market positioning. To cope with this extra bulk, the engine had grown to a
1.6-litre which produced 66bhp and gave the car 80mph performance, driving
through a 4-speed manual gearbox. The 1962 MkII version got bigger front disc
brakes and a revised axle ratio.
Supplied new by
Somerdale Garage of Keynsham near Bristol in April 1963, this charming Super
Minx MkII comes with a very large history file from new. The original
service book has nine stamps up to 23,799 miles in 1972 and the first owner also
kept a detailed log of every journey made in the car.
From at least 1984 – 2009 it was owned by a Ms Hitchens of Keynsham
who kept it religiously maintained by the same local garage, MJ Williams Motor
Engineers, with dozens of invoices over this 25-year period, at the end of which
it had covered c.62,000 miles.
There are plenty
more invoices for subsequent upkeep and the current mileage of 67,487 is
almost certainly correct. The car has never been restored, just kept in good
running order throughout its life and being repaired when required (it got new
sills in 2018).
The current keeper acquired the
car in April 2022 and it has been in daily use over the summer. Said to drive
well, it has been starting promptly and running sweetly as we have moved it
around on site, with good 55psi oil pressure.
A
charming and highly original Minx with tons of history and bags of character, it
now needs a caring new owner who can continue to enjoy and preserve
it.
