New Rover bodyshell; last of
the 1275cc carburettor fuelled 1275cc A-Series
engines; a much loved member of the family
The carburettor-fed
Mini Cooper, introduced in 1990 following the limited-run
RSP, re-established
the Cooper badge after nearly two decades. Powered by the lively 1275cc A-Series
engine with SU carburettor, it produced 59 bhp and delivered the classic Mini
driving experience –
nimble, responsive and full of character. Distinctive bonnet stripes,
contrasting roof colours and sporty trim made it instantly recognisable, while
the carburettor setup gave it a raw, mechanical charm later lost to injection.
Produced only until late 1991, these early Coopers are prized today for their
rarity and authentic period feel.
First registered in July 1991 and
showing only four former keepers, the current owner purchased the car in 1997
from the well-known mini specialist Miniman in Leamington Spa.
As
confirmed by the large quantity of receipts this Mini has had a pampered life
with a vast expenditure to keep the vehicle in rude heath, in 2009 the body
received extensive repairs and new panels. Continuing the theme the engine and
gearbox were fully rebuilt in 2011.
In 2015 the decision was made to go
the extra mile and a new genuine Rover bodyshell was purchased and the car was
then fully restored for a second time with a huge array of new parts. The
paperwork includes many invoices - more than £11,000 to cover this
extensive restoration.
The new Rover bodyshell was found that had been in
storage for many years after being used by the company that developed the
sportspack wheel arches, reputed to be one of the last new Rover shells
avalible.
A new sportspack dashboard and speedometer was fitted in
May 2000, the old mileage reading 64,082 and now the current mileage
showing as 29,793.
This is a much-loved member of the family has a great
history and specification, now looking for a new home, driven to the sale and
has been behaving perfectly, who doesn’t love a red Mini
Cooper.
