Launched in 2002
to replace the twin-turbo 3200GT, the naturally aspirated 4200GT was effectively
a four-seater Ferrari with swooping lines by Giugiaro. The heart of the beast
was the magnificent F136 engine, a 4.2 V8 co-developed with Ferrari which
produced 385bhp and 450Nm and could launch the Maserati to 60mph in 4.9 seconds
with a top speed of 177mph. Celebrated for its linear power delivery, it had a
distinctive high-pitched Italian howl guaranteed to get the hairs on the back of
your neck standing on end.
The
Cambiocorsa (Italian for ‘race shift’) refers to the 6-speed electro-hydraulic
automated manual transmission. Operated via paddle shifters behind the steering
wheel, it was derived from the F1 technology found in the Ferrari 360 Modena. It
offers four modes: Normal, Sport, Auto, and Low Grip. In Sport mode, gear
changes are executed in a crisp 250 milliseconds, while the Skyhook adaptive
suspension firms up to sharpen handling.
Supplied
new by Maranello Sales of Egham in July 2002, this 4200GT Cambiocorsa has had
just four owners from new, the second keeping it for six years (2004 – 2010) and
the third for 10 years (2010 – 2020).
The original purchase invoice
shows that it cost £70,686 including lots of extras – special order British
Racing Green paint; heated front seats; leather headlining; rear parking
sensors; cruise control; Skyhook suspension; GPS radio navigator; Blaupunkt CD
changer; gold finished clock; Briar wood steering wheel etc.
It has covered 83,180 miles with a good service history including
eight stamps in the book with many supporting invoices, the last in July 2020 at
71,482 miles.
The current owner acquired the car
in July 2020 and immediately had it checked over and fully serviced by Migliore
Cars of Bromsgrove which included new brake discs and pads all
round.
A well-known motoring journalist and
publisher with a celebrated collection of classic and Vintage cars, he has
covered 12,000 miles in it since, mainly on long-distance jaunts around France
and Italy. In September 2022 at 72,921 miles it had a complete new clutch
assembly by Migliore Cars which cost £4,290.
Originally registered as RL02 EZM, our vendor has fitted a nice
private plate to the car, MSF 6 (reflecting its MaSerati/Ferrari heritage),
which is included in the sale and, according to our number plate valuer, is
probably worth as much as the car itself.
As you
can see in the photos, the car looks to be in generally good shape for its
year/mileage with just a couple of scuffs on the o/s front and rear bumpers
which should be easy enough to sort.
Starting
promptly and running well on site, with a spine-tingling bark from the quad
exhausts, it has an MOT until May 2027 with no advisories recorded. All the
original handbooks are present, plus certificates for the installation of a Nav
Trak theft recovery system and two keys.
Everyone
should own a Maserati at least once in their lives. More genteel than a Ferrari
but with just as much pace and charisma, the 4200GT is a classic grand tourer,
balancing long-distance comfort with genuine supercar performance.
Only for sale due to the declining health of the owner who has now
been forced to hang up his driving gloves for good, this Maserati looks like a
no-brainer at the modest guide price suggested. If our number plate valuer is
even vaguely correct, someone could be getting this car for free if it sells
within the guide price…

been unable to locate the V5C so the buyer will need to apply for a new one
using the usual DVLA channels and payment of a £25 fee. The number plate is
