The Ford Escort XR3 is one of
the most recognisable hot hatches of the 1980s, combining sporting looks with
lively performance and becoming a firm favourite with a generation of
enthusiasts. Increasingly rare today, original, low-owner examples are
particularly appealing.
First registered in April
1982, this three-door Escort XR3 is powered by the 1,597cc engine with a
five-speed manual gearbox and is finished in metallic blue with the distinctive
XR3 sports interior. Showing just 33,802 miles, it has had only one former
keeper before the current vendor, who has owned the car since August
2019.
The car presents as a
remarkably original example, with only some age-related marks and slight damage
to one of the wings. It has been off the road for the last few years and, while
it starts, drives and stops as expected when cold, the vendor informs us that
after approximately six miles the engine appears to cut out and will not restart
until it has cooled down. The vendor believes the issue has been traced to the
ignition system, although further investigation will be required. A period of
recommissioning is therefore recommended before regular road
use.
The vendor advises that the
Escort was driven on site for photography and filming, where it started, drove
and stopped as expected.
With just
two owners from new, low recorded mileage and a highly original appearance, this
early XR3 represents a rare opportunity to acquire an increasingly collectible
hot hatch and would make an excellent basis for sympathetic recommissioning and
continued enjoyment.
