1956 Land
Rover Series I SWB Fire Engine; The odometer currently shows just over 14,000
miles which is believed to be correct by the vendor; The vehicle is believed to
have served as a fire tender for The English Electric Company Limited, thought
to have been based in Rugby, from the mid-1950s through to the late
1970s
The Land Rover Series I is one of the
most important British automotive designs of the post-war era, and specialist
vehicles such as this short-wheelbase fire tender are particularly rare.
Presented in period fire service red and retaining a wealth of original
equipment, this is a highly evocative example with considerable potential for
sympathetic restoration.
Originally registered as
KSV 625, the Land Rover has since been re-registered by the DVLA as 842 XWJ,
with the relevant correspondence and new V5C included with the vehicle. Having
spent much of its life off the public road, it is now MOT and tax exempt. The
odometer currently shows just over 14,000 miles which is believed to be correct
by the vendor.
The vehicle is believed to have
served as a fire tender for The English Electric Company Limited, thought to
have been based in Rugby, from the mid-1950s through to the late 1970s. It
retains many of its original fire service features, including the period fire
bell, original lights, hoses, hose reel, controls and bench seating, all
contributing to its highly authentic appearance.
The current vendor acquired the Land Rover approximately four years
ago as a restoration project, with plans to recommission it and potentially
convert it to diesel, although the work was never undertaken. The original
petrol engine remains fitted and turns over freely. The vendor advises that they
recently managed to get the engine running by introducing fuel directly into the
carburettor, although this has not been attempted by us. The fuel tank had
previously been removed for welding after developing a leak and remains with the
vehicle in the rear.
An early Series I fire
appliance with an exceptionally interesting history, original equipment and
showing just over 14,000 miles, this represents a rare opportunity for the Land
Rover enthusiast looking for a highly individual restoration project. Please
note that the ladder shown in the photographs is not included in the sale and
was used for demonstration purposes only.
