1977 Gilbern Invader
MKIII; the speedometer currently displays 91,769 miles; four-speed manual
gearbox and overdrive; underwent a comprehensive, ground-up restoration in May
2022; rolling road tested over 100 bhp
Gilbern was a
unique Welsh motor manufacturer that produced specialist sports cars between
1959 and 1973, earning a loyal following for its distinctive glass-fibre-bodied
designs and individual approach to British sports car construction. Built in
relatively small numbers, Gilberns remain an unusual sight today, with the
Invader MkIII representing the ultimate evolution of the company’s sporting
range.
First registered in May 1977,
this example has had eight keepers in total and is powered by a 2,994cc engine
paired with a four-speed manual gearbox and overdrive. Combining traditional
British sports car character with lightweight glass-fibre bodywork, the Invader
offers an interesting alternative to more familiar classics of the
period.
Originally finished in green
and black, the car underwent a comprehensive, ground-up restoration in May 2022,
during which it was repainted in the striking Rosso Corsa red seen today. The
vendor believes this attractive shade was chosen as part of the restoration,
giving the car a particularly eye-catching
appearance.
The accompanying paperwork
provides evidence of further investment in the car’s mechanical condition. An
invoice records £684 spent on a new carburettor, linkage and air filter, with a
subsequent rolling-road test reportedly recording over 100bhp. There is also a
receipt for £3,847.60 covering the recommissioning of the gearbox, overdrive and
clutch, representing significant expenditure on important drivetrain
components.
The speedometer currently
displays 91,769 miles, although the accuracy of this figure cannot be verified.
The available invoices provide useful supporting evidence of work carried out,
while the recent restoration adds further appeal to this distinctive British
sports car.
The Gilbern was starting,
driving and stopping as expected while on site for photography and a short
video.
With its rare Welsh marque
heritage, striking red finish, comprehensive restoration and documented
mechanical expenditure, this Invader MkIII represents an appealing opportunity
for enthusiasts seeking something rather different from the usual British sports
car offerings. A distinctive and increasingly uncommon classic, it would make an
interesting addition to a collection or a characterful choice for classic
motoring events.
