1974 FWX83M PEUGEOT 404
PICKUP
A LHD diesel pickup with lovely canvas top; liberated
from France in 2015 with much work carried out to make a very attractive and
practical vehicle
The
404 was a hugely popular model for Peugeot and almost 3,000,000 of them, in
various forms, were churned out between 1960 and 1991 (by which time production
had moved to Kenya). An extremely rugged old thing, the 404 was widely used as a
taxi and can still be seen all over Africa working hard for its living.
Our
vendor came across this 404 pick-up truck on a farm in the south of France in
2015 and carried it back to this country in a wave of desire for French goods
not seen since the early days of Brigitte Bardot.
He
has since registered it with the DVLA, repainted it in matt grey, re-trimmed and
fitted a new load cover to the truck. He also made sure it was up to scratch
mechanically, passing its last MOT in 2016 with two very minor picky-picky
advisories: play in the osf wheel bearing (they were all like that, mon ami) and
“headlight reflectors fitted” which many would say is a good thing!
It
is, in case you didn’t spot it, left-hand-drive and is powered by Peugeot’s
bullet-proof 1,900cc diesel engine. It is also indestructible, practical and
full of Gallic charm. We have enjoyed driving around the compound and it starts,
stops, runs and drives with all gears selecting and the brakes pulling up
reasuringly.  The underside is commendably solid and the underbonnet area
nice and tidy with excellent inner wings as is the 'well-plumped'
upholstery.
