1959 Goliath 1100 Express Tieflader
Pickup
Imported from dry-state America in 2014; rare
low-back pickup body; large quantity of spares
Quite what this
extremely rare and unusual pickup was doing in New Mexico remains a mystery. One
would have thought that a big, lazy Chevy pickup would be more suited to the
terrain, but all European manufacturers had their heads turned by the size of
the US market and hey, the Japanese certainly cracked it a decade
later.
Dating from 1959 according to the accompanying US certificate of
title, this interesting Tieflader Express came as part of a two-vehicle package
when it was imported from the States in 2014. One of just seven known to survive
according to the Goliath Veteranen Club, the wooden crate on the rear
was made simply for shipping purposes - housing the rear pickup hardware, rear
wings and spare wheel tray as well as a small mountain of spares to go with the
vehicle.
Although it hasn't run for some time, it remains an
interesting and fun project which would  result in something very useful to
have around in the future. The chassis appears to be in very solid order and
although the cab will require some work, it has certainly benefited from living
in the hot New Mexico climate. It also looks to be remarkably complete although
we haven't pieced it all together to check.
Sold with copies of the
import paperwork and the US title document, UK registration should be a
straightforward process.
