1972 Hillman Imp Super

Devilishly cool rear engine coupe; partly restored in 2011 from longer term ownership; spare original engine, gearbox and many other parts included; for recommissioning following time in storage

Dating from February 1972 this interesting little gem has been owned by our vendor since 2015, but has not been on the road as far as we can gather since 1996 when its last MOT, issued in 1995 at 43,475 miles expired. Offered for sale as an example that was running until last year but now requires a degree of recommissioning and completion (the vendor suspects the timing is out) after some winter tinkering it is offered for sale with an interesting history and a host of spares including spare gearbox, original side trims, dynamo, starter, spare side window and quarter light, spare headlights, bumpers radiator, fuel pump, voltage control boxes and transaxle, exhaust and other bits. In addition we found 5 spare original wheels under the bonnet with original hub caps. An engine is fitted, but its not the original which is included and was removed a number of years ago for reconditioning. It was never done. The car was subject, as we understand, to a partial restoration in 2011 but to what extent this was done is not clear although the general condition of the car looks to be good with lovely paint and a nice interior. The documents on file include the V5c, old DVLA forms regarding earlier ownership through the 70’s and 80’s along with a couple of old MOTs from the early 90’s and the last recorded in 1995. In addition there is a stack of old invoices, a Rootes parts manual, Haynes manual (might be useful!), original purchase invoice dated February 1972 showing the car cost £859.37 new and included Ziebart underseal, supplied and fitted safety belts and metallic paint as optional extras.  We also find a selection of images on file showing the condition of the car when purchased by our vendor along with other sundry historic paperwork. An ideal opportunity to complete this stalled recommissioning and given we generally all have more free time now we’re not on holiday or down the pub it makes a compelling case for itself, particularly given the body, paint and interior look to be in sound order and you have 2 engines, an 2 gearboxes to play with. There’s also the other school of thought, given their lightness and rear engine make-up, some potent conversions have been built with more modern running gear making them hill climb and track day weapons…..just a thought.
