1953 MG TD

Just two owners in the last 48 years; matching numbers UK car; transferable number plate; a lovely genuine old MG with bags of character

First registered in May 1953, this TD has had just two owners in the last 48 years, our vendor acquiring it in 2015 from a Birmingham gentleman who had owned it since 1973 and had paid the princely sum of £710 for the car – those were the days! A run of 30 old MOTs from 1975 to 2013 show that the car has always been in light but regular use, clocking up some 10,000 miles over this 38-year period.
During the vendor’s six-year ownership it has been kept garaged as part of a large collection of cars, getting occasional fine weather use which has only added another 400 miles to the odometer. Although the car comes with precious little service history, it has always been kept in good running order and has been starting promptly and running very nicely as we have moved it around on site.
Finished in black with a very original green leather interior the car is exactly how it looks in the photos: very sound and solid with lots of patina from years of gentle use. The vendor states that the car "goes very well and is meant to be driven and enjoyed rather than polished and cossetted".
The engine number on the block matches that on the chassis plate and on an old green logbook from the 1970s so it is safe to say that it is original to the car. It comes with a set of weather gear (hood and sidescreens) which are in serviceable condition and is fitted with a heater under the dash to keep you nice and warm in winter. It comes with what looks like an original owner’s handbook plus a couple of later parts catalogues and also retains its original Surrey-issue number plate, 8505 PE, which is transferable.
Dating from the last year of production, it is a rare home market car: of the 30,000 TDs built in total, all but 1,656 were exported, the vast majority to the booming American market. A really genuine old MG with bags of character, it now only needs a lucky new owner to give it the more regular exercise it deserves.
