1962 Ford Anglia Saloon

Lovely original example with just 53,000 miles showing from two keepers

Launched at the same time as the Mini and Triumph Herald, Ford’s new small car offering for 1959 was the Anglia 105E.

Although it was hardly in the same mould-breaking category as the Mini, the Anglia was bang up to date in terms of styling, its most recognisable feature being the ‘reverse slope’ rear window which, together with the car’s pointed tail fins, made it quite striking.

Ford had finally seen sense and had ditched the pre-war-designed side-valve engine and replaced it with a new overhead-valve 997cc unit mated to a new 4-speed gearbox. Production continued until the arrival of the Escort in 1967 with over one million Anglias sold, and it has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity of late thanks to appearances in the Harry Potter films.

Sold new in 1962 to a Mr Harbottle in Liverpool, he was to keep the car until 2016 when it went to live in the Pembroke area. Shortly after, if was treated to a respray and in 2017, the engine was overhauled with new rings, big end bearings and an oil pump. The brakes were also overhauled at this time with new wheel cylinders and a new master cylinder.

There is little more in way of information, except to say that it looks very smart and original. It comes with a Pitmans book on the Anglia and Popular and was happily driving around the site for the photographs - although the starter solenoid now seems to have given up the ghost (we haven't tried hitting it with the crank handle!).

Certainly one of the nicest examples we have seen, it would make a superb addition to any Ford collection.
