1936 Bedford ASYC 8cwt Van

Rare van from a private collection in a restored condition; familiar site at steam and vintage shows around Cirencester in the 80's

Dating from March 1936 this Bedford ASYC 8cwt van is now somewhat of a rarity, despite being a light commercial vehicle sector kingpin through the early/mid and late 30’s it bore close resemblance to the Vauxhall Light Six car.

From what little we know through the vendor of its history, the van was originally owned by the Castrol Oil Company before being purchased by Mr Jim Loveday, of Loveday & Loveday, a long-established removals company and furniture store in Cirencester, where it was a regular at the many Steam and Vintage fairs across the Cotswolds.

It’s believed the van was restored by Loveday during the 1980s before his retirement. Loveday and Loveday was then sold, however the successors later suffered financial difficulties and were subsequently purchased in 2003 by the current owners, GB Liners with whom it has remained since, occasionally attending local classic shows.

Starting promptly and running well as we moved it around for these images and video, its undoubtedly a charming thing and would sit well in any commercial vehicle collection and be admired at classic and vintage shows.

The van, as mentioned looks to be an older restoration, with some signs of cosmetic work perhaps needing localised attention in the future as with the driver’s side of the seat which has partially collapsed – all readily doable in the right hands.

The history file includes only the V5C, the van of course being both Tax and MOT exempt.
