The Packard Motor Car Company was one of the longest-lasting of the original American independent manufacturers. Founded in 1899 in Ohio by the Packard brothers and George Weiss, Packard became a popular choice among wealthy Americans, offering a range of exclusive and beautifully styled automobiles.
They also enjoyed significant success in Europe. By the time the Depression hit, Packard had developed a unique single assembly line system with all cars based on the same basic platform which enabled it to survive the economic chaos.
This gorgeous Packard Coupe is offered in excellent overall condition. It has a straight eight-cylinder engine producing approximately 110 horsepower from its 5.4-litres. The '733' in its name denotes its overall length of 134.5 inches which came as a convertible, sedan, limousine and even seven-passenger editions, illustrating the interchangeability of Packard’s one-platform system. A four-speed manual transmission was standard, alongside drum brakes at all four wheels.
Originally built in America, this Packard has spent most of its life in Canada. During the 1980s, a full restoration was undertaken by the previous owner which has held up extremely well. It was purchased and imported to the UK by the Vendor in 2018.
The Brown and Cream exterior is in great condition, the matching roof and luggage box are showing some lovely patina and the fabric has begun to age nicely.
There is a Golfers door to the passenger side; this allows access to a generous storage compartment behind the drivers seat. The Vendor is including a vintage canvas golf bag, complete with wooden clubs!
There are Tiffany signatures on the running board plates as these were designed by the luxury company and the chrome is in good condition; there is also a folding trunk rack to the rear complete with a removable trunk to allow for more storage.
The Packard Goddess radiator cap looks fabulous and there is a less desirable substitute included for times when you venture to “the wrong side of the tracks”! The imposing headlamps are augmented by a smart pair of Trippe driving lamps, all running on a 6-volt system, which also powers an electric fuel pump and Autovac system. There is a fully operational one-shot lubrication system, going to 42 points around the chassis.
During the restoration the interior was re-trimmed in buttoned and fluted velour which was completed to a high standard and is still in good condition. The dash features an eight-day Jaeger clock and other interior conveniences include door mounted glass wind deflectors, opening windscreen and hand operated external spot lamp. The rumble seat has minimal wear, it would appear that it has barely used.
The matching numbers 5.4 litre, straight-eight fired instantly on the day of our visit and idled with ease. Driving down the road, it is clear the restoration and maintenance has been to a high standard; the engine is smooth and responsive and easily competes in modern traffic. Most other drivers give way as they should!
All in all, a rare opportunity (especially in the UK) to purchase a truly spectacular and imposing Packard Coupe. It very recently won ‘Best in Show for the 1930s’ at the Horsley Show and offers effortless pace and comfort. This would be a fantastic vehicle for long distance touring and would be welcome anywhere.
