1935 British Salmson S4C Shooting
Rare car and even rarer Ranalah coachwork; stored in a barn for many years; in need of complete restoration; desirable twin cam 1,500cc engine
We assume that this was originally an S4C saloon, but it has belonged to our vendors family for a very long time and has always been known to be in its current ‘woody’ format. The vendor remembers waving his father off to work in it – and that would have been at least 60 years ago! The car has been stored in a barn in Devon for a considerable time, unfortunately suffering from the elements, until things got progressively worse and the roof collapsed on top of it. The original part of the body is labelled by the short-lived coachbuilder, Ranalagh Coachworks Ltd, who were only active for a few years before the second world war. Starting as John Charles and Co in 1932, they were often associated with manufacturers such as Lagonda and Daimler, but unfortunately went bust and the Ltd company was formed out of it in 1935. It is clear from the photos how much work needs to be done, but the chassis itself seems to have held up relatively well. The desirable DOHC engine is not free so this will obviously need work. Still sitting on knobbly tyres to cope with the dreadful Devonian lanes, this could be a great opportunity, not only to preserve a rare marque but restore it into something other than the Woody it is today.
Although DPC 951 is still registered with the DVLA, the vendor has not been able to put their hands on any original paperwork, so a new logbook will need to be applied for by the new owner in the usual way.
