1966 Jaguar E-Type S1 2+2
Well-maintained and in regular use; stainless steel exhaust and manifold; recent new clutch kit; high torque starter motor; Kenlowe fan; inertia reel seat belts; ready to enjoy
Launched in March 1961 the E-Type took the world by storm. It was not just the looks that made everyone sit up though. ‘The Motor’ magazine tested an early 3.8-litre E-Type at 149mph – a truly extraordinary achievement for a road car in 1961.
The Series 1 was upgraded to 4.2 litres in 1964, giving it 265bhp and useful extra torque. A stretched 2+2 was also added to the range in 1966 with an extra 9” added to the chassis, longer doors to aid getting in and out and a more vertical windscreen which gave valuable added headroom – if you are much over 6 foot, you just won’t get in a standard two-seater E-Type Coupe! Only 1,379 right-hand drive S1 2+2 models were produced before it was replaced by the rather less attractive looking Series 2 in July 1968.
This particular 2+2 is a UK market Series 1 manual gearbox model that dates from 1966. Not much is known of the early history of the car, but it was acquired by the last-but-one owner from The E-Type Centre of Staffs in 2002. He kept the car until 2013 and looked after it well, judging by the many bills on file. Jobs of note included a rebuilt cylinder head, new master cylinder, new carpets and professional waxoil treatment. It also gained several upgrades including a full big bore stainless steel sports exhaust system (including manifold), Kenlowe electric cooling fan and front inertia reel seatbelts.
The next owner kept the car from 2013 to 2016 during which time it clocked up around 1,500 miles and was treated to a new clutch kit, new cam cover gaskets and a high torque starter motor. Our vendor acquired the car via Brightwells in 2016 and has continued to look after it well, adding another 4,000 miles to the odometer with various bills for routine service items.
Said to have proved very reliable in the current ownership and to drive well, the car has certainly been starting promptly and running sweetly as we have moved it around on site with good 60psi oil pressure. It also comes with an original owner’s handbook and an Autopress workshop manual.
Only reluctantly for sale to help fund a property purchase, this tidy and well-maintained E-Type has room for the little ones in the back and is ready for a new owner to enjoy right away.
