1989 BMW 635CSi Highline
Few owners, the previous for 24 years; vast history file from new; hides its miles extremely well; endorsed by Quentin Willson; a very usable example of this classic coupe
BMW added a new coupe model to its range in 1976, the Paul Bracq-designed E24 6-Series. Long, low and rakish with a distinctive ‘shark nose’ front end and an elegant thin-pillared cabin, it was a natural rival to the Porsche 928 and the Jaguar XJS.
The platform was initially shared with the E12 5-Series, switching to the E28 5-Series in 1982, widely considered to be the best handling saloon in the world at the time. A range of straight-six engines were available from a 180bhp 2.8 to a smooth and potent fuel-injected 218bhp 3.5-litre which gave the car a top speed of 140mph.
All were beautifully built in the finest BMW tradition with superb performance and handling characteristics and luxuriously trimmed interiors. One of the most desirable cars of the '80s, the 635CSi remained in production until 1989 but its high price tag meant that only 86,216 were sold in total, the vast majority in left-hand drive.
First registered to BMW Fleet in August 1989, this 635CSi Automatic dates from the last year of production and has the top spec Highline equipment package which included M-Technic steering wheel; rear window blind; electric Sports seats with memory function; rear seat head restraints; electric sunroof; air conditioning; wider alloy wheels and a full Silver Leather interior including seats, dash, door cards and headlining. Finished in Royal Blue Metallic, it has had six owners to date, the 5th of whom kept it for 24 years (1998 – 2022) during which time it was registered as RAH 78.
Used as its makers intended, it has covered 182,344 miles but comes with an excellent service history comprising 36 stamps in the book up to 181,344 miles in June 2015, the majority at main agents and latterly by BMW specialist Autokraft of Earlswood. There are also three folders full of supporting invoices, including bills for two further services, the last at 181,781 miles in July 2019, giving an average service interval of just 4,800 miles – pretty impressive by any standards.
There is also a letter to the previous owner from Quentin Willson, dated October 2002 (when the car had covered c.172,000 miles), which says: “A quick note to say an enormous thank you for the loan of your splendid BMW 635 for our 5th Gear shoot. I was surprised that despite all those miles the thing drove so well and felt so fast. The car really is a credit to you. Finding another one in such good nick and so well cared for would be as easy as picking up spilt mercury with your bare hands!”.

Fitted with a Thatcham-approved alarm/immobiliser, it retains all its original handbooks and has an MOT until May 2023 with no advisories recorded. In remarkably good condition for its age/mileage, it is on offer here at no reserve so the best bid takes it home.
