1942 Dodge WC56 Command
Reconnaissance Vehicle
Ready for action; interesting Jeep
alternative; smart order complete with tools and top
Produced for
the US army from 1941, the WC (W for 1941, C for 1/2ton payload rating)
range were highly successful Dodge products and came in a multitude of variants,
including 4 and 6-wheel drive.
Some 21,000 4x4s were built before
production ceased in 1944, the WC56 being the Command and Reconnaissance version
so loved by General Patton.
An incredibly robust chassis was fitted with
a large body, with room for fold out chart tables and plenty of kit. Powered, in
this case, by Chrysler's 3,772 low-compression six cylinder, they would do 55mph
all out and thanks to the selectable 4x4, could cope with apalling
conditions.
Their distinctive shape meant that as the war progressed,
they became more and more of a target for snipers and enemy aircraft as they
generally carried senior ranks - hence production ceased before
hostilites.
We have enjoyed driving this one around the site, which could
do with a tune up as it runs a bit rich, but works as it should with a
super-sweet motor.
With nothing not to like except perhaps
its liking for petrol, this WC56 looks excellent value and terrific
fun.
