1988 Audi Quattro 10v
Ever-so cool digital
dash 10-valve Turbo Quattro that's been with our vendor for 30 years and was in
daily use until last year; massive history file back to 1990 with
documented engine rebuild
Dating from August
1988 this forever-Cool B5 Audi Quattro Coupe is finished in Nautic Blue and sits
on its original 15” 16-spoke alloy wheels with the wider wheels and tyres fitted
post 1984.
Under the bonnet, we find the front
mounted inline five-cylinder 2,226cc SOHC 10-valve engine with single turbo and
intercooler which developed 197bhp when new, in stock tune (the engine leant
itself well to easy tuning and development) driving all four wheels through
Audi’s famous Haldex Quattro system which spawned the famous and legendary
fire-breathing Group B Rally variants that dominated the World Rally
Championship.
This example has been with our
vendor for a total of 30 years, during which time he owned it, then sold it and
found it again on the Scottish Isles (Outer Hebrides!) and buying it back, since
when he and his wife have continued to love it, with his wife giving it daily
use until late 2022.
Inside the cabin, we find
the later of the LCD digital dash versions, in orange, introduced in 1988 with
light grey leather seats, electric windows, electric mirrors, sunroof, on-board
computer, additional RaceTech boost gauge and RaceTech oil pressure and temp
gauge (combined) to the right of the main instrument binnacle plus couple of
after-market switches (red and green as pictured).
We
also note heated seats, ABS and Diff buttons as well as an after market face-off
radio CD player fitted.  The car has
covered some 215,605 miles during its 34 years and we think, wears it well – yes
there are some areas which could be improved cosmetically as pictured but on the
whole for its age and mileage it looks well and offers the buyer scope to use
and improve as they see fit – the car remains a 10v Quattro
turbo.
The history file(s) are numerous, and
segregated into time periods, 1990-1996, 1997-2005 and 2008 to the current
period, as well as another containing 24 old MOTs as well as the V5C recording
eight former keepers to our vendor who has owned it twice, the current period
since 2014.
Within the files of history, we see
the car has received regular maintenance with a vast array of bills for parts
and maintenance works including an engine rebuild following discovery of a
cracked cylinder head, thus a new cylinder was fitted with engine and gearbox
sent to be overhauled and rebuilt
at 144,013 miles in 1997 by Elite Motor Tune costing £3,462 plus £1,891
for the engine rebuild by Reade Engineering also of Northampton. Another bill in
this file shows purchase of an MB-Hybrid turbo and exhaust manifold in
2003.
The front seats were recovered with a new
carpet fitted and new headlights installed in 2010 along with a ‘complete
restoration’ also in 2010 costing £3,360 by Excel Body Repairs of Northampton
along with further works including welding repairs to floor and sills, a gearbox
rebuild and new clutch kit Elite Motor Tune. The AC system was rebuilt in
2011.
More recently, the car was borrowed by
Sinclair Audi of Swansea for some promotional videos in 2018 and also received a
timing belt service in August 2019 at 212,700 miles and then new discs, pads and
fuel pump in 2020, new drop link bushes, CV boots and wheel bearing in November
2020.
Most recently the car was treated to new
front left and right wishbones, new clutch master cylinder and new battery in
March 2022.
An interesting example with a
considerable history file from long term ownership the car would now likely
benefit from some cosmetic attention and a fresh MOT, the last having just
expired in January this year, the last recording no advisories.
