Description
One of only around 800 made; lots of history; restored about 10 years
ago with many useful upgrades; a very smart example of this light and nimble
sports car
Ginetta was
founded in Woodbridge, Suffolk in 1958 by the four Walklett brothers and has
always specialised in producing dual purpose road and race cars using
lightweight GRP bodywork, tubular space-frame chassis and proprietary
engines.
The Imp-powered G15 was made between
1968 and 1974 and was sold as a kit (which avoided the punitive Purchase Tax)
for £849, or built up for £1,110. Around 800 were sold in total, mainly to the
sprint and hill climb fraternity, who appreciated the little car’s giant-slaying
abilities on track. Weighing just over 500kg and with 55bhp - 65bhp on tap
depending on the engine (875cc or 998cc), it could easily hold its own among
much larger machinery.
First registered in
October 1972, this G15 comes with a good file of invoices back to 1981 to show
regular upkeep. Old MOTs suggest that it was off the road from 2007 – 2012 and
then had significant bouts of expenditure over the next two years when it had
many new parts fitted by a previous owner in Oswestry, including a digital
speedo which shows that it has covered some 7,800 miles since
2012.
Other upgrades during this period
include: Weber downdraught carburettor; K&N air filter; electric fuel pump
and regulator/filter; alloy petrol tank, header tank and oil catch tank;
alternator; electronic ignition; pre-engaged starter motor; electric cooling
fan; Protec adjustable ride shock absorbers; rear roll cage; stainless steel
sill guards etc.
Our vendor acquired the car in
2018 and has covered around 1,000 trouble-free miles in it since. He has also
improved it still further including fitting period Cosmic alloy wheels in
place of the original steel wheels; a Maniflow manifold and sports exhaust; a
modified pedal box to give more space between the brake and accelerator pedals;
new Perspex side windows plus various other parts.
As you can see in the photos, it now looks very smart indeed and
has been starting promptly and running well as we have moved it around on site,
with good 60psi oil pressure. It also comes with a maintenance manual and lots
of useful technical literature about the model which should help to keep it
in good order for many years to come.
An
interesting alternative to the much more expensive Lotus Elan, the G15 is not
for those who value comfort and the quiet life, but if you enjoy lightweight,
revvy little cars that handle like go-karts, this nicely presented example is
well worth a look.
